Bedroom tax

In April 2013 a Housing Benefit rule change will, for the first time, set expectations for occupation of bedrooms within the home. Already nicknamed the bedroom tax, these rules are not strictly a tax, although may feel like one, because Housing Benefit entitlement is limited if one or more bedrooms is under occupied.

The Housing Benefit occupancy rules are still being fine-tuned, but are due to be finalised in October 2012.  Looking further in the future, when Housing Benefit claims are merged into Universal Credit similar bedroom tax rules are due to apply.
